Rural Iowans to Discuss Effects of Proposed Changes to Social Security
Iowans United to Protect Social Security Reports Consequences of Privatization and Benefit Cuts to Rural Iowa
Des Moines, IA – Washington residents and people from surrounding communities will be at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Washington on August 4 from 5:30-6:30 PM to discuss the future of Social Security as it relates to rural Iowa. "We want all Iowans to become educated about the proposed changes to Social Security," said Matt Russell, organizer for Iowa Citizen Action Network. "It's even more important that rural Iowans play a role in this debate because the impacts of any benefit cuts would be greatest in rural communities."
"Congress is considering changes to Social Security," said Lana Ross, Advocate for the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church. "That discussion needs to include the values that are a part of our religious teachings: compassion, economic security and fairness. Social Security is grounded in our biblical roots of honoring our father and mother and protecting the widow and orphan. As we contemplate changes, we cannot forget our Christian morals."
Participants in the discussion will be encouraged to contact Senator Chuck Grassley and Representative Jim Nussle who both play key roles in advancing any changes to Social Security. Nussle is running for Governor and needs to hear from all Iowans and not just those in the First Congressional District.
