Keeping the Promise of Social Security

Why Not Privatize?

Social Security is a promise, kept from generation to generation, guaranteeing dignity and independence.

  • Social Security is the closest thing our government has to a sacred trust.
  • For 70 years Social Security has reliably provided retirement security, life insurance coverage and disability coverage to all Americans.

There is no Social Security crisis.

  • Social Security has enough funds to pay full benefits for the next 40 years.
  • Privatization will result in drastically cutting benefits for everyone under age 55.
  • Risky private accounts will result in millions of Americans losing money; instead of a guaranteed benefit, it’s a guaranteed gamble.
  • And privatization means adding to the federal deficit by borrowing trillions of dollars to replace the trillions diverted to insurance companies and Wall Street to create personal private accounts.

We should strengthen this public program – not break our promise by privatizing Social Security.

Oppose any Social Security plan that:

  1. Cuts guaranteed benefits;
  2. Weakens the system by diverting money from the Social Security trust fund to pay for private accounts; or
  3. Increases the federal deficit to pay for private accounts.
