Many of the items planned for the event have been ribbon winners over the years so you won't want to miss out on sharing these special treats with our special guest, Senator Tom Harkin.

2010 ICAN Award Recipients

Legislative Leadership - Senator Tom Harkin

For 25 years, Senator Harkin has served the people of Iowa as a member of the US Senate. As our Senator, he has been a champion for workers, family farmers, the disabled, and all Americans who are overlooked in society. He has fought for environmental policies that build our communities, protect our health and sustain our land for future generations. And this year, Senator Harkin was a key Senate leader in the passage of the Affordable Care Act that will finally provide health insurance to 30 million uninsured Americans.

Grassroots Leadership - One Iowa

One Iowa is the state’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization, committed to full equality for LGBT individuals, including the freedom to marry. Since 2005, One Iowa has been an effective advocate for the community, working with progressive partners to pass safe schools and civil rights legislation. Grassroots participation and education have been key to One Iowa's efforts to secure and protect the freedom to marry in Iowa. ICAN is pleased to honor One Iowa for their leadership in bringing about this historic advance for civil rights in Iowa.

Political Strategist - State Senator Jack Hatch

State Senator Jack Hatch receives this year’s Political Strategist award for his prominent role in passage of the Affordable Care Act. As the Chair of the White House Working Group of State Legislators for Health Reform, Jack worked with elected officials and advocates around the country to mobilize support for health care reform. Senator Hatch understands and values the role of grassroots organizations, and has led Iowa’s health reform efforts by working with health care advocates on state and national legislation.
