Diverse Iowa Activists Collaborate for Economic Justice

Staff and leaders from labor, faith, senior, policy and advocacy groups participated in a working session yesterday, May 25, hosted by the Iowa Citizen Action Network (ICAN), as part of the Americans for Responsive Taxes National Week of Action.

This train-the-trainer meeting brought together Iowa groups in support of federal economic justice legislation for the first time since collaborating on economic recovery legislation in 2008 and 2009. Representatives from AFSCME, AFSC, Iowa Policy Project, Iowa Alliance for Retired American, Iowa Child and Family Policy Center, Iowa Citizen Action Network, Iowa Fiscal Partnership, Iowa Main Street Alliance, and RESULTS attended. Attendees made plans to coordinate with the state budget and taxes coalition—the Coalition for a Better Iowa—of which many are already partners.

A new interactive tool for public education, a workshop from United for a Fair Economy, was debuted. Participants provided feedback to improve and customize the presentation for their shared use and began planning a calendar of presentations for the next few months. This workshop, when presented as planned to diverse constituencies across Iowa, will build needed momentum to move public opinion and take back the public discourse. The attendees from American Friends Service Committee and the Unitarian church will plan the first presentations co-facilitated by their leaders and ICAN’s staff.

All participants agreed that it is crucial that Iowans be made aware of the deep impact that federal budget and taxes decisions have on our daily lives. And it’s time for our neighbors to stop being misled by conservative talking points into supporting policies and candidates that are not in their self interest or in the interest of their neighbors and community.
